I just got a call from one of the dem presidential campaigns asking for money. As soon as I answered the phone, the person started their schtick, so I interrupted and said, "I cannot donate now, but--" but I was interrupted.
Can I offer some advice in the form of a rant? If you're one of these callers, read on the flip.
Because I've worked phones in the past and know it's a pain in the butt to read your script all the way through only to have someone firmly say they won't donate, I try to cut you off immediately so that I don't waste either of our times. I understand you, the caller. Really, I do.
But STOP IT!
I'm a teacher in the CSU. I made $34,000 last year teaching four classes each semester. I just sent money to Planned Parenthood, more than I usually donate, because of the supreme court's idiotic decision. I have three kids, a mortgage, and you know what, if I say I CANNOT DONATE, then LISTEN TO ME!
Instead of listening, you said something like this, "While we're asking people for two hundred dollars, how about if I put you down for..."
I hung up on you.
Maybe you don't get it, but I CANNOT DONATE NOW.
I tried to be nice, said it twice, but you continued, and so did I.
I CANNOT DONATE NOW.
Do you get it?
Now, to those of us who can't donate, or already donated, or would rather put our money somewhere else, go ahead and say something positive about your candidate. I don't care. Just don't keep pushing for a donation.
